I know there are people who already mod their Huawei E220 Modem to support an external antenna. I just bought that modem last month and subscribe to Celcom Broadband packages (Malaysia). After a month using celcom broadband I still not satisfy with the speed. Celcom broadband suck.. the connection is terrible.. every 15 minutes it keep disconnecting. What the funnnn!!.. Now I have to doubled my working time, since the connection is SUCK.. Maybe I have to find another alternative. External antenna maybe. Like my DIY wifi antenna, I have successfully quadrupled the gain. But with this Huawei E220 I think its not that easy to mod it. Need to reasearch first otherwise i will brick my modem.

The pictures shows the internal view of Huawei E220. The one in the red circle is the connector for the external antenna. Yes, it is possible to add the external antenna. We just need to find the suitable connector for that. I still searching for the suitable connector. Unfortunately the connector is smaller than ZTE MF622 .

As you can see at the back of ZTE MF622 there is a connector for external antenna.

There are a lot of external antenna for ZTE modem, but for huawei E220 sigh! Where i can get it. Any suggestion. At least for the connector.

As I promise before (Cheap Solution for Wireless Signal Booster (Homemade Wireless Antenna) I would like to give instructions on how to create your own wireless signal booster. Right now i am using free Wireless connection from school 500 meters from my house. Before this I couldn’t even connect to Google due to terrible wireless signal. In this tutorial I am using Aztech 802.11b/g USB Adaptor. If you have wireless pci card, the procedure still the same. By doing this you can increase your wireless signal up to 12Db. If the signal too low you may need a monitoring software like netstumbler. There are few wireless antennas out there that you can purchase but that’s not cool at all. Do it yourself!.

Basically the diy wireless antenna that I want to setup is parabolic wireless antenna. And this is the cheapest solution for extended wireless antenna. Building a wireless signal booster DIY style. Tool that you need are Cheap USB wireless modem, antenna holder, aluminum foil and USB extension cable. I tried using the long extension cable but it does no detect my USB wireless devices , maybe because not enough power supply.

Step 1 The Reflector I found pre-made template on the internet for this.Downoad this pre made antenna templateI just doubled the scale to fit my cardboard. Once you already downloaded the template cut it into the shape. I am using plastic file’s case. You may use cardboard get the cheapest one lol. I cut the square hole in the middle to fit the Aztech wireless USB adapter.

Step 2 Cover with the aluminum foil. Once we the template is ready. Go to the kitchen and grab the aluminum foil. Ask your mom first! Cover the template with aluminum foil and use your sister’s uhu glue.

Step 3 Antenna Holder Get some material for antenna holder. I am using curtain’s holder for this (no idea what’s the words lol).

Last step Mount your USB and to test the correct position and direction for the antenna.

Adjust the position of your wireless antenna booster so you will get the maximum signal gain. This is the difficult part since we don’t know from where the signal coming from. You can use this also as to increase your router signal. This is my result.

Look at the SMKKB_AP1 the gain is from 7% to 29% the gain is quadrupled plus I got 2 more signals. Good luck!. Experimenting is the best part in this tutorial. If you want to get better wireless signal booster, additional software might help.

Do it yourself! Yea thats the right word for my latest project. I spent almost a week to make a research on how to increase Wireless Signal. I live nearby a school in a district area in Kota Bharu. Few months ago my sister’s lappy detected a wireless signal coming from the school nearby, but the signal was very poor. I can’t event load google with it. So last week i made an experiment on how to boost the WiFi Signal. I found a good and cheap solution for that. They call it “Poor Man WiFi” . This is an inexpensive solution for high wireless gain. I made an experiment with all different materials including milk can, pepsi can, pringles can, a wok, and this one. I don’t know what people called this hehe. Its a kitchen utility.

So the idea is base on the wave’s behavior. The normal wifi antenna is omni directional or 360 degree angle. The range is big but the wave can’t travel far due to lost in energy. From my experiment if the wave travel approximately 30 degree, we can get very high gain.

Pringles can is the most ideal for this. But Pringles can give me lot of signal noise due to interference. Correct me if i am wrong. So i adjust the radius. and came out with a good signal gain. The signal was doubled and noise is reduced a little bit. The suitable angle is 180 degree. So i design a parabolic antenna with 180 degree. See picture .

Rofl. Now i can use internet for free.huhu. can save some money. But i can’t access few website because it was blocked by the provider. I f you want to try to increase your wifi signal you may need this tools.

I will show step by steps tutorial on how to do this so stay tuned . By the way this is the place where i start my research
